Chevron's testing indicated that higher BN oils used enable healthy cylinder condition at lower feed rates when using high-sulphur diesel
Chevron Marine Lubricants has launched Taro Special HT Ultra, the first BN140 cylinder lubricant approved by OEMs for use in the highly corrosive environments of the latest two-stroke diesel engines.
The new oil, developed in collaboration with Chevron’s key customers and MAN Diesel & Turbo, is designed to tackle cold corrosion that occurs in modern two-stroke cylinders due to the condensation of sulphur on the cylinder walls. Chevron noted that using a higher BN oil has been shown to be a better option than increasing the feed rate of lower BN oils when using high-sulphur diesel.
“It is far more efficient to switch to a higher BN lubricant once a certain rate is reached, providing superior corrosion protection with less product injected into the cylinder.”

Chevron, which developed the product in direct response to challenges faced by one of its customers, noted that the new oil also enables flexibility for on-board blending of cylinder oil. MAN Diesel & Turbo is developing its own on-board blending system, ACOM, and recently noted that BN140 oils – above the usual range for lubricants and with far greater basicity than those used with low-sulphur fuels - could allow minimum feed rate to be maintained at higher sulphur levels. The engine developer confirmed that it had been testing BN140 oils from several brands.
Chevron also stressed the importance of optimising injection and alkalinity, noting that its DOT.FAST analysis service – combining shore-based lab work with onboard measurements – provides data enabling operators to balance wear against oil consumption at the lowest cost.
A spokesman for the company confirmed that MAN Diesel & Turbo is the first OEM to approve the new oil.
