Lubricant Producers(LUPAN) protests multiple taxation by the Nigerian Govt. Agencies

The Lubricant Producers Association of Nigeria (LUPAN) has protested the continued multiple taxation from both the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and the National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for the importation of base oil into the country.

A statement signed by the executive secretary of LUPAN, Emeka Obidike, which was made available to LEADERSHIP Weekend yesterday frowned that its members were being tasked with the payment of dues by NAFDAC, despite being shown a genuine DPR license. Obidike alleged that NAFDAC had in most occasions confiscated their consignments and also gone ahead to detain the consignments of importers, insisting on beingpresented with NAFDAC licenses and proof of the dues being paid. The statement explained that LUPAN members are duly licensed by the DPR to import, store and blend base oil in Nigeria, for their blending requirements.

It further stated that the base oil so imported is a mineral based crude oil derivative and is classified as petroleum oil and oils obtained from bituminous minerals in the national list of the ECOWAS Common External Tariff and Fiscal Policy Measures for 2015, and not obtained from chemical synthesis (synthetic oil).

He continued: “Indigenous blenders are constantly being threatened with the shutting down of their plants and seizure of their consignments and are persistently being faced with the risk of losing their businesses, corrosion of their goodwill and professional integrity, asphyxiating demurrages and transactions and defaulting in the repayment of facilities.

By the Petroleum Act, the Department of Petroleum Resources is the primary regulator of the petroleum sector and its sub sector and that their continued refusal to acknowledge this fact could be construed as a blatant disregard and encroachment on the authority and jurisdiction of the DPR.”

The association therefore appeals to the federal government to call to order the coordinating ministries of both the DPR and NAFDAC with a view to delineating the jurisdiction of both agencies’ with respect to licensing of base oil importation in Nigeria.

NUPENG shuts down TOTAL Nigeria Lubricants section

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) on Friday shut down the lubricant section of French oil giant, Total over allegations of anti-labour practices.

The South-West Chairman of NUPENG, Alhaji Tokunbo Korodo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the clampdown was as a result of a threat by the management of Total to sack 70 workers for belonging to the union.

Korodo said that members of the union were deployed at the main entrance to Total’s blending plant to disrupt activities.

He alleged that the management of Total had engaged a contractor, named Jomoy Nig. Ltd., to employ casual worker for the lubricant section of Total at Kirikiri in Apapa, Lagos.

“Because of the inexperience of the management team of Jomoy, they are planning to sack over 70 workers of the company because they joined the union.

“The company has now directed all staff of the company to report at the office of Jomoy to collect cheques for December salary.

“The memo required them to bring along their staff ID cards and HMO ID cards.”

Korodo said that the company was planning to withdraw the staff ID cards from the workers and then sack them.

He said that the union, therefore, resorted to shutting down activities at the blending plant in a bid to prevent sacking of workers.

The unionist said that if the management of Total did not address the issues, the showdown might be extended to other product lines of the company.

On Dec. 15, NUPENG carried a similar protest to the Lagos headquarters of U.S. oil major ExxonMobil, shutting down operations of the company over allegations that the company had sacked 150 workers.

Oil companies in Nigeria have embarked on cut-cutting measures because of a biting economic recession in the West African country.

Analysts estimate that no fewer than four million jobs have been lost in Nigeria in recent years.

They have limited or no backward compatibility with on- and off-road diesel engines for which manufacturers recommend CJ-4 lubricants.

Duplicate lubricant being sold to 2-wheeler owners in India

"If a staff at a bike service centre try to lure you with cheap engine oil next time, don't fall into the trap."  These were the words of a TimesIndia editor while publishing this article. Duplicate lubricant is being manufactured in the city as original product and being sold at a hefty discount. City police on Saturday arrested for the anomaly, three persons who ran auto repair cum service centers on the outskirts of the city.

During interrogation, it was found that the nexus is being run from Alambagh and Lalbagh, the two automobile spares and accessories hubs. Oil company Castrol gave specific inputs to city police on the basis of which 81 litre duplicate engine oil was seized from the auto repair market located across Mohan road in Para.

While 1 litre branded oil costs over Rs 240, the three garage owners sold the same amount of duplicate lubricant for Rs 140. Police seized the 65 containers from the three shops which were located within a distance of 1 km.
"The containers were bearing the logo of Castrol company. Three representatives of Castrol were with us during the raid and checked the viscosity of the oil. It was evident, they were not selling the original product," said Para police station house officer D K Upadhyay.

Police team comprising sub-inspector Deepandra Yadav and Siyaram picked up Brahmanand, Sampurna Singh and Santram, the three garage owners. An FIR was registered against the trio for cheating and infringement of Copyright Act.

While grilling the three, police got names of a businessman from Alambagh apart from an auto part dealer in Lalbagh market. "We have some leads and are trying to trace the unit where duplicate lubricant is being manufactured," added Upadhyay.
Use of poor quality engine oil generates contamination and sludge which decreases the life of a two-wheeler. Duplicate lubricant is made by processing crude oil but is much inferior in quality.

EN Europe: Shell has recently launched a new version of its Tellus. How can your hydraulic oils can help improve the reliability of hydraulic systems?

Mr. Draper: Shell Tellus S2 MX and Shell Tellus S2 VX have been designed to improve system reliability in three distinct ways.  Firstly, they provide enhanced anti-wear protection to ensure that the equipment last longer in service and protects the customer’s investment.  This is reflected in the approval listing by Bosch Rexroth for Shell Tellus S2 MX (with Shell Tellus S2 VX planned to follow), a demanding new approval issued in response to increased performance demands of modern equipment.  This enhanced anti-wear capability also provides potential benefit for older equipment so is not just relevant to new installations.

Secondly, they are designed for longer oil life, with twice the life of the previous products in the ASTM D943 oxidation test.  Finally, they  provide excellent system efficiency through separation from air and water, and filtration performance.  These benefits help ensure that equipment operates as it was designed to do throughout the service interval, not just immediately after a fluid change.

IEN Europe: Which are the main challenges the sector is now facing? How do you respond to these needs?

Mr. Draper: In recent years, changes to operating conditions have increased stress on manufacturing equipment. With productivity paramount, customers are seeking to increase output capacity by minimizing unplanned equipment shutdowns and extending maintenance cycles.  Machinery is required to work under higher temperatures, greater power density and in operating pressures that have risen by as much as 500 bars. What’s more, the trend towards downsizing equipment means a smaller oil reservoir, which means there is less lubricant available in the hydraulic system. In many countries, particularly places like China, there have also been rapid technological advances. For example, the growing prevalence of industrial robots are making the need for reliable, precise, unmanned equipment operation more vital than ever. That requires lubricants and greases that can be trusted to deliver efficient performance without close monitoring or interruption.

IEN Europe: Research and Development plays a critical role in the innovation process. Which are the main sectors your R&D department is now investing on?

Mr. Draper: We have over 200 scientists and engineers working in specialised technical centres for lubricants in China, Japan (JV), US and Germany and we work closely with academic institutions on technology development for lubricants, including Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, Imperial College, London, UK, Eindhoven University, NL and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.

The evolving nature of the manufacturing sector and the demands being placed on equipment is one of the reasons we invest so heavily in product development. VIVA Opens massive new Lubricant Facility at Pinkenba, Australia

Viva Energy Australia officially opened its new $18 million Pinkenba bulk lubricants terminal, claiming it as the country’s largest such facility with world-leading loading technology.

The terminal has a storage capacity of 3.2 million litres and can manage up to 30 lubricant grades, the company says.

Speaking at the opening of the facility in Brisbane’s north-east, Viva Energy CEO Scott Wyatt said the terminal took 36,000 man hours to complete, created more than 120 local construction jobs and is designed to be scalable and flexible according to customer needs.

"This is an exciting development for Viva Energy as we have the ability to adapt to increases in both the volume and type of lubricant products required by customers," Wyatt says.

"The terminal stores the bulk lubricants in horizontal tanks and each loading gantry is automated – featuring dedicated pumps, piping and loading arms to protect product quality.

"In a world-first, the horizontal tanks are gravity loaded, rather than pumped in from the bottom of the tank, which increases operational efficiencies.

"The tanks also have the fastest loading rate in the Australian market.

"Our bulk lubricants terminal is complemented by a third party warehouse base, which is capable of processing more than 14,000 pallets of packaged lubricants annually."

ExxonMobil to Become Red Bull Racing's Official Fuel and Lubricant Partner

Red Bull has confirmed it will switch lubricant supplier from Total to ExxonMobil next year.

The team will use Mobil 1 lubricants for its power unit and gearbox. The deal will also see ExxonMobil branding appear on the RB13 plus the drivers’ overalls and helmets.

Engine lubricants have become a more critical element in car performance since the current V6 hybrid turbo regulations were introduced at the beginning of 2014.

“Mobil 1 has been an iconic brand in Formula One for more than 30 years and our new partnership provides us with a unique opportunity to tap into ExxonMobil’s world class expertise,” said Red Bull team principal Christian Horner.

“In addition to welcoming ExxonMobil to the Red Bull Racing stable, I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to the technical team at Total, who have made a valuable contribution to our success in Formula One during our partnership.”

Red Bull’s signing is a coup for the team as ExxonMobil has been a long-term supplier of lubricants to McLaren.

ExxonMobil vice-president of marketing Matt Bergeron said the company is “excited about building a relationship with Red Bull’s excellent young drivers who are establishing reputations as competitive racers and who will help showcase our brands to generations of consumers”.

Petro-Canada releases new CK-4 and FA-4 diesel oils

TORONTO. On the first official day for the American Petroleum Institute’s two new heavy-duty diesel engine oil classifications, Petro-Canada Lubricants has launched a full product line of CK-4 and FA-4 oils. The Duron Next Generation lubes “are the culmination of three years of hard work,” according to Eric Attias, Petro-Canada’s dir. of marketing and R&D, and will completely replace the company’s CJ-4 Duron-E lineup.

The first time API has approved split classifications for new and older engine use, CK-4 and FA-4 are designed to help truck manufacturers meet new fuel efficiency standards and lower CO2 greenhouse gas emissions requirements. While CK-4 oils are backwards compatible with all older diesels, FA-4 is only approved by most manufacturers for new engines, so Petro-Canada has introduced new Duron naming and packaging to clearly identify the two for fleets that may find themselves using different oil classifications as they bring new trucks into service.

The new Duron lineup has three CK-4 products offering different levels of performance, though all provide significant improvements in engine durability, wear protection and extended drain potential over the CJ-4 Duron-E line, according to Barnaby Ngai, category portfolio manager.  DuronHP is available in 15W-40, a viscosity that represents 80% of the North American diesel market, he said.  Moving up in performance, Duron SHP is available in two viscosities, 15W-40 and 10W-30, which adds extreme temperature performance for fleets that require it.  Duron UHP, a fully synthetic oil, tops the CK-4 line with 10W-40, 5W-40, 0W-40 and 0W-30 weights, which provide even higher extreme temperature performance and potential fuel economy benefits, according to Petro-Canada.

The company’s FA-4 line, which comes in distinctive gold jugs to easily differentiate it from the CK-4 products, is called Duron Performance.  Initially it’s available as a 10W-30, with a 5W-30 version following in early 2017.  It represents the highest level of fuel economy benefit when used with new engines, according to Ngai.  Not meant to be backwards compatible with older engines, some engine OEMs will use FA-4 as the fill lubricant for their 2017 engines, while others will approve its use with their new engines but ship them with CK-4 oils.  One – Detroit Diesel – has also approved FA-4 for use with any of its engines produced since 2010, according to Petro-Canada, which believes other engine makers might also extend FA-4 approval to some older engines as they gain experience with the new classification.

To help fleets transition to the new split classifications, Petro-Canada has launched an online “info hub” to outline its CK-4 and FA-4 product differences and applications. It has also relaunched its Duron Challenge. That trial program provides with 30 or more trucks with a drum of the new Duron lubricant and then uses pre-trial and post-trial used oil analysis to demonstrate performance in a fleet’s actual operations.

Formulating HD diesel oils to meet increasingly stringent emissions and efficiency requirements has greatly increased the complexity of testing and qualifying products, according to John Pettingill, a product specialist at Petro-Canada.  In 1990 meeting API’s CF-4 standards only required four test, while CK-4 and FA-4 must pass 13 category tests while also remaining within a specified “chemical box” to remain compatible with diesel aftertreatment systems, he said.

That testing to achieve the CK-4 and FA-4 classifications cost “multiple millions of dollars,” according to Tony Weatherill, global marketing director.  Currently supplying lubricants in 80 countries, Petro-Canada has used that investment as an opportunity to also refresh its global products with the new classification performance characteristics, he said.

Accountant Allegedly fakes own kidnap and steals Eterna Plc.'s $50,000

An accountant with a lubricant producing company in Ikoyi, Lagos State, Femi Akinola, has been arrested by officials of the Nigerian police for allegedly stealing the organization’s $50,000.


It was learnt that the manufacturer – Eterna Plc – had sent a 30-year-old Akinola to withdraw the sum from the United bank for Africa in the Marina peninsula on Thursday, November 17.

On getting back to the Company, he reportedly told his boss that he had been kidnapped on the way from the bank, pronouncing that his abductors dispossessed him of the money and his telephones.

It was however gathered that Akinola was arrested by the police shortly after.

Police investigation reportedly ascertained that he faked his own kidnap.

He was mentioned to have led the operatives to the fence of a school in the Bariga area, where $30,000 hid inside a concrete block was then recovered.

Whilst being paraded on Friday at the Lagos State Command headquarters in Ikeja, the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, mentioned that Akinola stripped himself and threw his telephones right into a river to in order to stiffen the evidences.

China in Strong Pursuit of Biodegradables

Few weeks ago, we introduced the emergence and sustainability of the Bio-Lubricant. It is safe to say that Bio-Lubricant is the future of the Lubricant industry. With its harmless environmental pollution consequences, it has been a fancy of many countries, with China gradually advancing this frontier, closing tailing its European counterparts.

Looking at any random engine lubricant company in China, be it a foreign brand or domestic, you'll see that "green" or "Eco-friendly" is frequently used to give the product a competitive edge.

But what exactly does "green" mean? According to the labels, it means the Lubricant is blended using highly refined API Group III base oils or synthetic base stocks that promises to reduce the vehicle's tailpipe emissions. Now, another concept - biodegradability- wants to be part of the picture.

In June, at a U.S. - China low-carbon summit in Beijing, Danfer Lubricants introduced its bio-synthetic engine oil collection, made from ester base oils derived from castor oil. The Yongskang, Zhejiang province-based lube supplier said the oils have stable performance down to  -50 degrees Celsius. The products including SAE 0W-i0 and 5W-40 grades claiming API SM performance and a CH-i-type 10W-50 diesel oil - are marked as fuel efficient and able to run 20,000 km without changes.

"These engine oils are the results of years of research and experiments," said Cui Xiaoying, vice director at Nankai University's engineering research centre for castor oil in Tianjin, which developed Danfer's bio-synthetic technologies.

Series of researches have been done with positive yield in Synacol having a collection of castor oil based gear oils and industrial lubes. Despite the fact that the lubes are bio-degrable and fuel efficient, sales are not climbing fast. "Biodegradable is a very new concept for the Chinese consumers, as price as been the primary factor for a consumer's buying decision", said Dr. Cui. For example, while the Helix formulation (Mineral) has a Viscosity Index of 168, No.1 scores 179; HXS8's flash point is 215 degrees Celsius, and No.1 reaches 239. In a rare move for a Chinese private Lubricant company, RHYT actually sent its No.1 series out for testing against the API standard - and posted the results on its website.
This is a gradually building proof that BIO-LUBRICANTS  have a lot more potential and benefits to the Lubricant industry, as more Firms are beginning to unravel the yet unseen mysteries of this sector.

Chinese Additive Manufacturer (Tianhe) Debuts Dubai Production

Chinese additive manufacturer Tianhe Chemicals began streaming at its production facility in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, earlier this week.

Originally slotted to stream earlier this year, Tianhe increased its initial planned capacity in Dubai from 30,000 metric tons of additive components and packages per year to approximately 35,000 t/y, CEO G.S. Ravi told a reporter last week.

“The first batch will start on Monday, Aug. 29, and we will take a decision to expand or not in 2018,” said Ravi. The plant will supply various performance additive packages mainly to the Middle East region, although portions of its output will be exported to India.

Tianhe noted that at least part of the plant’s capacity will be reserved for contract manufacturing.

Tianhe Chemicals claims to be the largest Asian lubricant additive manufacturer. The firm is headquartered in Jinzhou, in the northern coastal province of Liaoning, and has production and research and development facilities in China. The company said it also has a 220,000 square foot R&D center in Bangalore, India.

It also expanded into Japan this year, and is constructing a production facility in Singapore that is set to open early next year. Tianhe had planned to pursue partnerships in the United States and possibly build a plant there via a joint venture, but has since noted that its North American plans have been put on hold.

Tianhe markets additive components such as zinc thiophosphates, ashless dispersants, detergents, extreme pressure additives and additive packages for engine oils, gear oils and industrial lubricants. The company was quoted to have said that it is particularly targeting growth in the industrial segment.

The firm has said it aims to sell its additives globally and reach a scale comparable to the industry’s four main additive suppliers – Lubrizol Corp., Infineum, Chevron Oronite and Afton Chemical. Tianhe is also a large supplier of fluorochemicals.

Cloud Point - Temperature at which a noticeable cloud of crystals or other solid material appears when a sample is cooled under prescribed conditions.

Cold Cranking Simulator (CCS) - An intermediate shear rate viscometer that predicts the ability of an oil to permit satisfactory cranking speed in a cold engine.

Complex Grease - Lubricating grease thickened by a complex soap consisting of a normal soap and a complexing agent. Use of soap complexes gives products which have higher dropping points than similar lubricants made from normal soaps.

Corrosion Inhibitor - Additive that protects metal surfaces from chemical attack by water or other contaminants.

D

Defoamant (Foam Inhibitor) - Additive used in lubricating oils to assist the collapse of surface layers of foam caused by agitation or the release of entrained or entrapped air.

Demulsibility - Ability of a lubricant to separate from water.

Detergency - Ability of a lubricating oil to reduce or prevent deposits formed under high temperature conditions or as a result of the action of the oil of acidic contaminants.

Detonation - Uncontrolled burning of the last portion of the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder of a spark ignition engine. Also known as “knock” or “ping”.

Dielectric Strength - Measure of the insulating value of an electrical insulating medium. The value depends to some extent on the test method used.

Dispersancy - Ability of an oil to disperse and suspend potential deposit-forming materials so that they can be removed from the system when the oil is drained.

Dropping Point - Temperature at which the first drop of liquid separates when a grease is heated under prescribed conditions.

E

Emission Control System - Any of several systems intended to reduce the amount of atmospheric pollutants released by automotive vehicles.

Emulsifier - An additive that promotes the formation of a stable emulsion, usually of oil and water.

Emulsion - Intimate mixture of two or more materials which are immiscible or partially miscible with each other. In most emulsions, one material is aqueous and the other is an oil.

EP Additive - See Extreme Pressure (EP) Additive

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) - System to reduce automotive emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx). It introduces exhaust gases into the intake manifold where they dilute the air/fuel ratio. This reduces peak combustion temperatures, lessening the tendency for nitrogen oxides to form.

Extreme Pressure (EP) Additive - Chemical compound imparting extreme pressure characteristics to a lubricant with the objective of reducing wear under conditions where rubbing or sliding accompanies high contact pressures, as in heavily loaded gears, particular the hypoid type.

F

Filler - Any substance such as talc, mica or various powders, which may be added to a grease, but is not considered as being primarily intended to enhance the lubricating properties of the grease.

Film Strength - Ability of a film of lubricant to resist rupture due to load, speed and temperature.

Flash Point - The lowest temperature at which vapours rising from a sample will ignite momentarily on application of a flame under specified conditions.

Floc Point - The temperature at which a flocculent collection of wax crystals first appears when a solution of freon in oil is cooled under prescribed conditions.

G

Gasohol - A blend of gasoline (petrol) and methanol or ethanol for use in spark ignition engines.

H

Hydrolytic Stability - The ability of additives and certain synthetic lubricants to resist chemical decomposition (hydrolysis) in the presence of water.

I

Induction Period - The time period, in an oxidation test, during which oxidation proceeds at a constant and relatively low rate.

Insolubles - Contaminants found in used oils due to dust, dirt, wear particles or oxidation products. Often measured as pentane, toluene or benzene insolubles to characterise the nature of the insoluble material.

J

K

Kinematic Viscosity - Measure of a fluid’s resistance to flow under gravity at a specific temperature (usually 40°C or 100°C).

Knock - Noise associated with the premature ignition of the fuel-air mixture in a combustion chamber.

KOH - Chemical symbol for the alkaline compound potassium hydroxide.

Load-Carrying Capacity - Qualitative term to describe the ability of a lubricant to resist film rupture and protect against wear and surface destruction under conditions of high speeds, high loads, high temperatures or combinations of these.

L

Load Wear Index - Index of the ability of a lubricant to prevent wear under applied loads as determined in the Four-Ball EP Tester.

Low Speed Pre Ignition - An abnormal combustion event, which can occur at low engine speeds in smaller, turbocharged, gasoline direct injected engines. Characterised by spontaneous ignition of the fuel that starts before the spark is generated, it creates a downward force and exerts peak pressures that can exceed 100 bar. At high loads this results in very strong knock, which in the most severe cases can result in damaged pistons, broken piston rings and bent connecting rods.

Lubrication - Control of friction and wear by the introduction of a friction reducing film between moving surfaces in contact. The film may be fluid, solid or plastic.

M

Metal Deactivator - Organic type of additive having the property of suppressing the catalytic action of metal surfaces and traces of metallic materials exposed to petroleum products. The most important catalytic action is the promotion of oxidation.

MIL - Prefix designation for U.S. Military Specifications.

Moly - Commonly used abbreviation for molybdenum disulfide.

Molybdenum Disulfide - Chemical compound of molybdenum and sulfur which has excellent properties as a solid lubricant due to the type of molecular structure of the particles.

Motor Octane Number (MON) - A numerical indication of a gasoline’s ability to prevent detonation under high speed, high load engine operation.

Multigrade - An oil that meets the low temperature viscosity limits of one of the SAE W numbers as well as the 100°C viscosity limits of one of the non-W numbers.

Multipurpose Grease - Lubricating grease suitable for a variety of applications such as chassis, wheel bearings, universal joints and water pumps on automotive equipment.

Multiviscosity - See Multigrade

N

Naphthenic - Having the characteristics of naphthenes, which are saturated hydrocarbons containing molecules with at least one closed ring of carbon atoms.

ndm - Used to define bearing speeds . “dm” is the arithmetical mean of the outer diameter and the bore in millimetres (sometimes called the pitch diameter). “n” is the speed in rpm.

Neutralisation Number - Measure of the acidity or alkalinity of an oil. The number is the mass in milligrams of the amount of acid (HCI) or base (KOH) required to neutralise one gram of oil.

Newtonian Flow - Flow in a fluid where the shear rate (flow rate) is directly proportional to the shearing force (pressure).

NF - Abbreviation for National Formulary (U.S.), generally used in reference to requirements for the purity of white oils.

NLGI Classification Numbers - Series of numbers used to classify the consistency (hardness) of a grease, based on a standard ASTM cone penetration test..

NLGI Service Classification System - System of letter designations to define classes of automotive chassis and wheel bearing greases.

Non-Newtonian Flow - Flow in a fluid where the shear rate (flow rate) varies in relationship to the shear force (pressure). Oils containing viscosity index improvers exhibit non-Newtonian flow.

Nitration - Process whereby nitrogen oxides attack petroleum fluids at high temperatures, often resulting in viscosity increase, corrosion and deposit formation.

O

Octane Number - Term numerically indicating the relative antiknock value of a gasoline. The octane number of a petrol basically depends on its hydrocarbon composition and is improved by the addition of antiknock compounds.

Octane Requirement (OR) - The lowest octane number reference fuel that will allow an engine to run knock free under standard conditions of service. OR is a characteristic of each individual engine.

Octane Requirement Increase (ORI) - As deposits accumulate in the combustion chamber of an engine, its octane requirement (OR) increases.

Oxidation Stability - Ability of a lubricant to resist oxidation and deterioration resulting from high temperatures and/or exposure to air.

Oxygenate - Organic compounds containing oxygen which can be blended into gasoline to improve the octane number or reduce exhaust carbon monoxide (CO) content. Alcohols and
ethers are oxygenates, some of which may be used in gasoline formulation.

P

Paraffinic - Having the characteristics of paraffins, saturated hydrocarbons of open chain structure.

PCV System - Abbreviation for Positive Crankcase Ventilation system, a system for internal combustion engines designed to provide positive scavenging of crankcase vapours and return
them to the intake system.

Penetration - Consistency, expressed as the distance that a standard needle or cone penetrates vertically into a sample of the material under prescribed conditions of loading, time and temperature.

Pour Point - Lowest temperature at which a liquid petroleum product will flow when it is cooled under the conditions of the standard test method.

Pour Point Depressant - An additive which lowers the pour point of petroleum products containing wax by reducing the tendency of the wax to collect into a solid mass.

Preignition - Ignition of the fuel/air mixture in a petrol engine before the spark plug fires. Often caused by incandescent deposits in the combustion chamber.

R

Reid vapour Pressure (RVP) - Usually used in reference to petrol, it is the vapour pressure of a sample at 37.8°C (100°F).

Residual Fuel - Fuel composed mainly of materials remaining as unevaporated after distillation of crude oil.

Ring Sticking - Sticking of the piston ring in its groove, usually due to heavy deposits in the piston ring zone.

Rust and Oxidation (R&O) - Additives used to enhance the rust and oxidation resistance of oils and greases.

S

SAE Grade - Grade indicating the viscosity range of a crankcase, transmission or rear axle lubricant, according to systems designed by SAE.

Series 3 - Abbreviation for the discontinued Caterpillar Tractor Company crankcase oil specification “Superior Lubricants (Series 3)”.

Shear Stability - Ability of a lubricant such as a grease or VI improved oil to withstand mechanical shearing without being degraded in consistency or viscosity.

SKF Test - Any of several practical tests for greases using ball or roller bearings, developed by SKF.

Sludge - Soft deposits, usually dark coloured, formed in lubrication systems, mainly consisting of oxidised lubricating oil components, water and, in internal combustion engines, carbonaceous residues from fuel combustion.

Smoke Point - Term numerically indicating the burning characteristics of kerosene or aviation turbine fuels.

Soap - General term for the “salt” of a fatty acid. Ordinary washing soaps are those of sodium and potassium. Soaps of lithium, sodium, calcium, barium and aluminum are the principal thickeners used in grease making.

Solvent Neutral Oil (SNO) - Base oil manufactured from solvent refined paraffinic lube distillates.

Spindle Oil - Low viscosity oil for the lubrication of high speed spindles such as those used in textile mills.

Straight Mineral - Oils which do not contain compounds or “additives”.

Sulfated Ash - Residue that remains after a sample of oil has been oxidised under prescribed conditions and the resulting residue reduced to a constant weight by heating with sulphuric acid. Used as a measure of the amount of metallo-organic additives present in new oils. In used oils, the determination may be affected by the presence of incombustible contaminants such as lead alkyls, dust and wear metals.

Sulfurised Oil - An oil in which elemental sulfur is either loosely combined with the oil, or is combined with a fatty oil and added to the oil. Used in applications where reactive sulphur is desired to provide extreme pressure characteristics, such as in gear oils and cutting oils.

Supplement 1 - Abbreviation for obsolete military specification US Army 2-104B (Supplement 1).

Synthetic Lubricant - Lubricant made chemically by reacting materials of a specific chemical composition to produce a compound with planned and predictable physical and chemical properties.

T

Tailings - In mining, the residue materials leftover from the process of separating the valuable materials from a mineral ore.

Thermal Stability - Property of a fuel or lubricant which indicates its ability to resist cracking and decomposition on prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures.

Thickener - Solid particles which are uniformly dispersed to form the structure of a grease in which the liquid lubricant is held.

Timken OK Load - Maximum load a lubricant will withstand without failure due to breakdown of the lubricant film, as determined on the Timken EP Lubricant Tester.

Typical Test - Test results that are characteristic of a product, normally mean values obtained from analysis of a number of production batches of that product.

U

USP - Abbreviation for U.S. Pharmacopoeia, usually used in reference to purity standard for
medicinal white oils, or white oils that will come in contact with food.

V

Viscosity - Measure of the resistance to flow, or internal friction, of a fluid. Viscosity changes with temperature so the temperature at which the measure has made must always be specified. See also Apparent Viscosity, Kinematic Viscosity.

Viscosity Index (VI) - An arbitrary scale used to show the relative magnitude of viscosity changes with temperature. Higher VI oils have less change in viscosity with temperature.

Viscosity Index Improver (VII) - Lubricant additive, usually a high molecular weight polymer, that reduces an oil’s tendency to change viscosity with change of temperature.

W

Wetting Agent - Compound having the property of modifying the characteristics of the contact between a liquid and a solid surface to promote more rapid and complete wetting of the surface.

Worked Penetration - Penetration of a sample of grease immediately after it has been brought to 25°C and worked 60 strokes in the ASTM grease worker.
